the New ipods

OK, if you've read the previous post, this is the moment I've been waiting for, the arrival of the new iPods. Just about 8 hours ago, Steve Jobs announced the arrival of the new iPods,

This includes the:

  • iPod Touch
  • iPod Classic
  • iPod Nano
  • iPod Shuffle

iPod Touch

The one that impresses me the most was the iPod Touch. Very iPhone-ishhh. But the features are kind of disappointing. Yes I can forgive Steve for the slimmer model, wider 3.5-inch screen, WiFi (only b/g no n), wireless surfing which includes wireless itunes. But I'm kinda wandering now, if Apple rushed this model out and missed out on some very important features like Bluetooth, a camera, more video format support and audio format support and what about the capacity??

The new IPod Touch( ok this is the newest of all as in totally brand new) comes with two capacities. A mere

  • 8GB
  • 16GB
That's all?? So little. If it was 80Gb and 160 GB, I wouldn't think twice and grab one of this now!! I wouldn't mind sacrificing on the thickness. Mind you this thing is only 8mm thick, thinner than the iPhone. but seriously I rather have more space.

Like I said, very iPhone-ishh, This is coverflow, should be familiar to all Mac users.

IPod Touch, very slimm......Similar interface to Iphone. With the usual iPhone keyboard interface. Again very iPhone-isshhh which makes it very appealing to me but sighhh... space. BUMMER!!!

IPod Touch

IPod Classic

Ok, The latest generation of the IPod Video now called the IPod Classic, duhh... I mean it all started with this right?? This model sort of gave birth to the iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffle. The IPod Classic (6th gen) comes with
  • even more capacity, 80Gb and 160GB
  • more battery life
  • with coverflow
  • and some extras
What makes this the second most appealing model to me is the enormous capacity 80GB and 160GB which as Apple states can hold up to 20 000 songs for the former and 40 000 songs for the latter, which fits me. Apart from that, the even larger space allows stuff for videos, series, games, podcasts, audiobooks etc....

slimmer, sleeker design

Coverflow plus an enhanced browsing interface. No surfing though

Ok, since this is the 6th gen IPod. Why can't Apple include more features apart from the more aesthetic interface. Bluetooth would be good. Surfing is a big no-no. How the world are you going to surf in a 2.5-inch screen??

Things that I wish was there:
  • Added support for a wider range of video formats which includes, xvid, divx, flv, avi etc would be fantastic. Come on Apple when are you going to admit that the world's not run by movie formats like .mov, mpeg and h.264 formats?? Please spare me those video conversion softwares. Added support means no conversion or less time wasted and immediate viewing pleasure.... I wouldn't mind those on a 2.5-inch screen
  • Added audio support for other lossless format like .flac, ape(monkey audio) and lossy format like .ogg apart from the ubiquitious .mp3

iPod Shuffle

There really isn't anything new about the iPod Shuffle...really juz a bunch of new colours, which I find rather ugly looking compared to the previous colour schemes. The only ones which I like is the red, The rest is juz ewwww....Ok Silver, wat de hack, is been around for yrs!!

IPod Nano

Ok the reason I put this newest addition to the IPod lineup as the last in my review is if it isn't obvious enough already is its hideousness. It's just ugly. The IPod Nano a.k.a iPod Phatty/Fatty is just designed in the wrong way. If you ask me, I rather have the previous generation of the IPod Nano.

Yeah yeah...
  • better design...as claimed by Apple.(but seriously I can't see why or rather where??)
  • Coverflow albeit sluggish as reported and the new improve interface with
  • Added video support (finally), but still its ugly.
  • Improved Battery life
I would rather strip off the entire scrollwheel thingy and add more screen space in the way the old iPod Nano is designed.

Also hideous colour. The cyan and green is ugly. Red and Black is fine. Silver is by default Apple

Probably or Undeniably...

the most underutilized and unprofessionally used Command in Windows. Or maybe we are all just too Noob for it. Care to guess?? Alright IMO, a not so professional one, but I guess it should apply to the general population, is the Run Command. Just press Windows Button + R and you will launch it.

familiar???

Probably Microsoft haven't make any refreshing change to this command. I don't use Vista so I don't really know. I have this personal motto of not trying out a fresh new operating system unless its more than a year old or if its a Mac. Hehe

Well you see I don't really know how to use this command well. Apart from running cds or dvds, launching programs like winword which stands for microsoft word, notepad for notepad and command prompt and a bit of other things, I can't seem to dig out anything more useful from this really puzzling program..Sighhh Call me a noob, but I'll humbly accept it, so educate me for those who are better informed???

But for all you fellas out there who happened to be as bewildered as me. Try the very refreshing and aesthetically pleasing Launchy. It kind of borrowed the idea from QuickSilver, a Mac OS X software which beats the shit out of RUN completely. I think I can hear Mac Users saying...ahahahah
Copycats!!!

If there was a boxing match between Launchy and Run, Run will be punched to pieces and Launchy would make a boxing belt out of its innards..Ewww GROSS

Alright this is how the interface looks like. By default it has this shadowy border. And just inside, is a sort of translucent/semi-transparent glass-like border and a black space to type out the programs you want to launch. You can change the Launchy skin by just right clicking on it and choose from a rather wide range. But i personally like the default skin. Very Mac-isshh..

Right-Click and this Directories box would come out and you will have to manually add in files or folders that you want Launchy to scan.

Alas, File types is what I feel gives it the real kick-ass greatness. Cos you can add any type of file with any type of extension just as long as you have the proper program to launch it.

Steps:

  1. So let's say you want Launchy to launch PDF files,

  2. then just type in .pdf into file types.

  3. You want MP3s, then just add in .mp3s,

  4. then Launchy will immediately scan the particular folder for any mp3 files.

  5. But first you must click OK and right click then select Rebuild Index. And Launchy will update the file entries its currently scanning.

Oh yaa... don't worry about Launchy, as it launches automatically with Windows BUT it doesn't hog a huge amount of resources away from Windows.

This program is currently open source. which means the program's code is freely available for anyone to modify and the current version of Launchy is Ver 1.25

Ok Launching/Opening Files or Apps

This is friggin' easy. And you don't need to know any specific letter to launch a program. So if you type say..."W" in Launchy, then it automatically comes out with an option of programs with "W" for eg:

  1. Alt + SpaceBar to launch Launchy. (By default, this is the keyboard shortcut to launch it.)
  2. Say you want to open Windows Explorer, so you may want to spell out the whole 2 words. NO!!!!! Dats wat makes this program magical.
  3. Type the letter "W"
  4. Microsoft Word may come out, and any other programs with the word "W" on it will be in the list.
  5. You can get the list by just pressing the down arrow.
  6. Chances are you can immediately launch Windows Explorer by just pressing "W" and go down the list.
  7. Press Enter

So if you still don't know what I mean, say you want to launch Mozilla Firefox:

  • just type either "m", "e", "f" or "z" to launch it. "O" might just display firefox but if you can't get it the first time just add another letter next to it. like "MO" and press Enter
Huh?? If you are getting confused already. Just use it and familiarize yourself with it.

It is truly easy to use and a blessing to all windows users who have to
  1. Either double click on a short cut button, or
  2. Launch the Start Menu before getting somewhere or . This is probably the slowest WAY!!
  3. Probably having to launch Windows Explorer to open a file. Also quite SLOW!!

So what about files from your USB or External Hard Disk.
  1. Just input the designated alphabet for the particular Drive say F: or G: or Z:
  2. and then Rebuild Index andvoila any file in that particular drive can be scanned or
  3. if you want it to be more specific just go to F:\Abc\123\....to launch whatever files in whatever folder
  4. Of course finally Press Enter!!

Ok I can go on forever, so explore!!!
