BMedSc in a Nutshell
Some of you might be wandering what happened to the people from M204 who took up the BMedSc program. What kind of research are they up to? Can't those fellas just update on what they are doing??
Ok, for starters:
- There are 11 people in our batch ONLY.
- 8 from M204 and 3 seniors
- The 8 are Me, Hong Lim, Ignatius, Debbie, Nikki, Siow Wei, David and Jonathan.
- We are all called I107 from some very strange reason which I still can't figure out..
- All of us are doing DIFFERENT research project, no share share here....
- So that means there are 11 research projects.
- We are all definitely going to Queensland, providing that we all get at least a 2nd class Lower
Me - Anticancer properties of ginger, Cyp4501a inhibitory activity.
Hong Lim - Antioxidant, anti-proliferative and anti-mutagenic properties of Pereskia Bleo
Ignatius - Astaxanthin, some algae ( something like mine)
Debbie - Collecting faeces from crows and air sampling for some parasitology and bacteria study
Nikki - Some hyperglycaemia thingy on rat aorta
Siow Wei - Ovarian Cancer
David - Prostate cancer
Jonathan - Chimaeragenesis.
Basically for the whole year, we will be doing research like REAL researchers but of course with the help of our supervisors. All our supervisors are really helpful and so far everything has been going quite well since we started.
In fact all of us just finished presenting our research proposal on Tuesday. Some of us will be going through the ethics committee next Tuesday doing the same presentation but of course with more emphasis on ethical issues eg:
- Patient Consent
- Proper Animal Killing Methods
- Collection of specimen
Throughout the whole year, there will be lots of lab work, (depending on the research project also), paperwork, reports, statistical analysis, presentations, publication and after all of that ONE major exam. Everything should be finished by October except for the exam.
All the research students have a cubicle and a computer to work with in our research office which means for the whole year we'll be sitting in our "office" doing our research. The good news is that we are not alone, and our batch is the BIGGEST, and we'll be going to Queensland together with the research students from M104 so which means we have something like 20 students going to Queensland.
The best thing about BMedSc is that you have more time and freedom to do what you want and there are lots of interesting things to learn in a different environment. The bad thing is that even when you have a lot of time, sometimes you need to come back at odd hours and check on your lab work, eg: cell culture; to see if everything is fine but still it all depends on our study design. If we perform cell culture such that we don't need to come back at 10 o'clock at night, then we come only in the morning/afternoon to check the progress of the cell culture.
